Player Safety

OMGHA is committed to keeping our players safe while playing hockey.   We think knowledge is power and we will strive to educate our players, families and coaches about topics that will enhance the safety of our kids.   The following are some initiatives that we are supporting.

Baseline Concussion Testing

More than 25% of youth ice hockey players sustained at least one concussion in a single season. Are your athletes prepared with a baseline test? Baseline testing measures an individual’s pre-injury “normal” cognitive function. If they ever get a suspected head injury, doctors can compare post-injury results to their own baseline.

This year, OMGHA has partnered with ImPACT Baseline Tests to provide baseline testing.    Use promo code USAHOCKEY to purchase the test ($20 retail value) online at BaselineTesting.com for $3 per test. It is an at-home baseline test that is easy to administer and complete. Please note that the results will not be given to you directly, but instead will be able to be accessed by a medical professional. ImPACT will ask you to download an app to have handy in the event you need to use your athlete's baseline test results in case of an injury. The process is all pretty simple and straightforward.

Stop the Bleed

To show our commitment to our players' safety, OMGHA is purchasing a number of Stop the Bleed Kits that will be available to teams in the event of an emergency.

The first aid training described below will also address how to respond to an emergency involving blood.    This initiative is promoted by USA Hockey.

AED Training and Resources

AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) save lives!!  Did you know that our OMGHA rinks have AEDs available for use in an emergency?  We want to make sure that our families know where they are and how to use them.   OMGHA, in partnership with Advanced First Aid, Inc., plans to offer training on hockey specific first aid AND how to use the AED machines we have in our rinks.

Please plan to attend an AED and Hockey First Aid training class on November 14 at 7:00 pm at the Maple Grove Community Center.   An EMT will be present to demonstrate how to use the AED devices at our rinks.  He will also discuss other hockey specific first aid.   Anyone is welcome and encouraged to attend!   Player and Family safety is our priority.
